Helping Deserving Students A Service To Society; Hope Political Parties, Leaders, Industrialists Etc Would Lend A Helping Hand: Madras High Court

The Madras High Court on Friday (20th November) expressed hope that Political Parties, Leaders, Cinema Stars, Industrialist, Cricketers and Wealthy People would adopt Medical College Students, who have been admitted in Government Colleges. The Bench of Justice N. Kirubakaran and Justice B. Pugalendhi further observed that "helping the deserving students is a service to the Society." Court's further observations It may be noted that the Tamil Nadu government on September 15 had unanimously passed a bill in the state assembly to provide 7.5% reservation in undergraduate courses in medicine, dentistry, Indian medicine and homoeopathy for government school students who clear NEET. In this context, the Court said, "The students from marginal sections alone are opting to get admission in the Government Medical Colleges. Those children, who get admitted in Private Medical Colleges under the Government Quota, may not be in a position to pay the amount of Rs.4 lakh approximately per year." Therefore, the Court further said, "We expect that the Government shall ensure that the eligible students should not discontinue their M.B.B.S. course for want of resources. The Government shall also ensure that the eligible students pursue their M.B.B.S. Course and in the event that the Government is inclined to provide helping hand to the eligible students, who are incapable of paying the fee, an undertaking shall also be obtained from the students for their services in rural areas." The Court also noted that on seeing the News items with regard to the lack of resources for paying Medical College fees by a daughter of coolie, "Mr.Veera Kathiravan, learned Senior Counsel, who is practising before this Court, voluntarily himself adopted the said girl to pay the entire fees for the Medical Course." The Additional Advocate General, appearing for respondents 2 to 4, sought time to get instructions "as to what are all the facilities going to be given to the students, who have been admitted under the Government Quota in Private Medical Colleges, as the fee is going to be paid at least Rs.4 lakhs per year."
