Over 400 Judicial Vacancies In Indian High Courts; Four In Supreme Court And 31 In Delhi HC: Law Ministry Tells Lok Sabha

As per the information provided by Ministry of Law & Justice, there were 419 vacancies of Judges in 25 High Courts on the said date.

This includes vacancies of 64 Judges in the Allahabad High Court, 31 Judges in the Delhi High Court, 30 Judges in the Bombay High Court and 40 Judges in the Calcutta High Court.

Further, 4 Judicial seats remain vacant at the Supreme Court of India against the sanctioned strength of 34 Judges (including the CJI).

The working strength of Judicial Officers in District and Subordinate Courts was 19,318 on January 28, 2021, as against the sanctioned strength of 24,247 officers.

Pendency of cases

In response to another question, the Law Ministry has disclosed that in 2020, a total of 63,146 cases were pending before the Supreme Court.

A total of 56,42,567 cases were pending before the Indian High Courts on December 31, 2020.

The highest number of cases were pending in Allahabad High Court— 7,73,408. Significantly, this figure is an improvement as compared to 9,44,657 cases that were pending before it in 2019.

The Allahabad High Court was followed by the High Courts of Punjab & Haryana, Bombay and Rajasthan with 6,37,148, 5,59,119 and 5,23,600 pending cases.

The least number of cases were pending before the Sikkim High Court— 241.
