A criminal defamation suit has been filed against Bollywood actress Kangana Ranaut over her tweet saying that a lady farmer joined farmers protests after taking money.

The 73-yr-old lady farmer, Mahinder Kaur, has moved the Magistrate Court, Bhatinda, seeking initiation of criminal proceedings against Ranaut for making false imputations that she is available for hire at protesting sites, for Rs. 100/-.

It is claimed that the complainant belongs to a farmers' family and has been sitting on demonstration against the Farmers Acts from the very first day despite the fact that she has been facing a lot of inconvenience being an old aged lady.

"The complainant is even unable to walk properly without the help of the stick but still she is fully supporting the farmers in the agitation and peaceful demonstration…Complainant also went to Delhi to participate in the agitation…During these days of severe cold/ winter season, the complainant was sitting on the roads day and night since 25/26.11.2020 and also faced the hurdles in the way while passing the borders of State of Haryana despite huuge barricading by the Police," the complaint states.

It is alleged that false imputations made by Ranaut that the Complainant is not a genuine protestor and has been paid to gain sympathy during the protests has lowered her reputation and prestige, and has made a mockery of the resilient farmers' protests.

"The Complainant was earlier kept in high estimation by her villages and acquaintances but due the levelling of false, defamatory allegations and scandalous remarks against and the complainant by the accused on the social media, the complainant has fallen in her own estimation also in the eyes of the other farmers sitting in the agitation who started enquiring from the complainant about the matter President of Kisan Union at Village Bahadurgarh Jandian and they also started forcing the complainant to go back apprehending that their agitation may fail due to the aforesaid false tweet by the accused wherein the complainant has been addressed to be a fake lady and having been brought on hire basis which is in fact totally false allegation," the plea states.

The Complainant has thus urged the Magistrate Court to prosecute Ranaut under Sections 499/500 (Defamation) of IPC and direct Ranaut to pay a suitable compensation under Sections 357/357A CrPC.
