The Karnataka Government has requested the Government of India for an allocation of 20,000 vials of Liposomal Amphotericin B, which is used for the treatment of black fungal infection, estimating that more than 400 patients will be affected with black fungal infection, every week.

In its written submission filed before the Karnataka High Court the state government has said "The State Government vide letter dated 12.05.2021 has requested the Government of India for an allocation of 20,000 vials of Liposomal Amphotericin B, which is used for the treatment of black fungal infection. This requisition is based on the estimation that one patient will require about 4 vials of 40-80 mg per day over a treatment period of 10-12 days; thus, about 50 vials would be required per-patient, for the whole period. It is expected that more than 400 patients will be affected with black fungal infection every week."

Further it is submitted that "The State Government, through the Karnataka State Medical Supplies Corporation, has also placed orders for the supply of 450 vials of Inj Amphotericin B on private manufacturers i.e. M/s Mylan Pharmaceuticals (P) Ltd. and 600 vials on M/s Bharath Serums & Vaccines Ltd."

As on 17.05.2021, the State has received 450 vials of the medicine. The said medicine is being distributed using the same mechanism which is being applied for distribution of Tocilizumab. The distribution and indenting of the same is being monitored by the State War room.

Recently the government has declared Mucormycosis or black fungus infection a notifiable disease and that no hospital or medical centre having the capacity to provide treatment should deny admission to patients.
