The Kerala High Court on Friday issued a notification permitting the use A4 size papers in all courts in the District Judiciary for physical filing, instead of legal size papers, with immediate effect.

This move comes after e-filing was introduced in the District Judiciary with effect from 1st January 2022.

Consequent thereof, several complaints were raised regarding the difficulty in using legal-size papers for filing.

The High Court notified that it has already initiated steps to amend Rule 10 of the Civil Rules of Practice, Kerala, which requires pleadings to be presented in foolscap folio paper.

Use of A4 size papers will be more convenient for the Lawyers, litigants as well as the Courts and thus rule 5(1) (a) of the Electronic Filing Rules for Courts (Kerala), 2021 prescribes A4 size paper, instead of foolscap folio paper, the notification stated.

"In the circumstances, whenever physical filing is required, the High Court hereby permits filing in A4 size papers in all courts in the District Judiciary. The above direction shall come into force with immediate effect."

The Kerala High Court had launched its pride project called the Virtual Office on January 1st, 2022 with the features of e-filing, paperless courts and e-office.
