A Public Interest Litigation (PIL) petition has been filed in the High Court of Kerala seeking steps to regulate the steep rise in the prices of onions, garlic and shallots.

The petition filed by Advocate Manu Roy, who had unsuccessfully contested as LDF candidate in the recent bypolls for Ernakulam legislative constituency, sought a direction to the Union and State Governments to take necessary steps to regulate the price hike.

The petition stated that onions, which used to cost about Rs 12-18 six months ago, are priced between Rs.120-140 now. Shallots were priced between Rs.30-40 and garlic between Rs.60-70 six months ago. Now they are priced between Rs.130-160 and Rs.180-200, respectively.

The out of control price rise is spreading panic among people, and their daily budgets are getting derailed, the petitioner said.

The Governments, who are duty bound to control the price rise, are not doing anything, he alleged.
