'No Further Orders Required': Madras High Court Disposes Plea Against Traffic Congestion, Illegal Parking On Chennai's GST Road

Expressing satisfaction at the report submitted the Commissioner of Police (Egmore) in view of a previous direction dated November 16, Justice S.M Subramaniam observed that no further orders are required in the matter.

"According to the Compliance report, a special squad has been constituted to ensure free flow of traffic in G.S.T Road. Measures have been taken to prevent irregular parking in front of commercial establishments. The report submits that swift action is being taken in case of contraventions. In coordination with officials of Tambaram Corporation, irregularities in parking/encroachments have been addressed," it noted.

The development comes in a plea filed by Chrompet GST Salai, Puduvai Nagar Siruthozhil Vyaparigal Sangam, claiming to be working for the welfare of small scale traders and residents in the area, seeking directions to the police and municipal authorities to inspect the extent of traffic rules compliance by respondent commercial establishments.

Vide order dated November 16, the High Court had issued directions to the police and municipal authorities to take action against corrupt practices by traffic police and deploy special teams in strategic urban areas during peak hours to avoid traffic congestion.

Today, the counsel appearing for the second respondent, Pallavaram Municipality, submitted that the validity of traders' licenses have also been verified and action will be taken in instances of violations.

"It is needless to state that such actions must be consistent and periodical. Construction of commercial establishments on the footpath and encroaching the road must be averted. In view of the actions initiated by Police and Tambaram Corporation, no further orders are required. Respondent authorities are bound to ensure that free flow of traffic is continued in the future as well. Compliance report accepted."
