Mohan Katarki, Senior Advocate Joins International Law Association's Sea Protection Committee

Mohan Katarki, Senior Advocate, has been inducted as a member of the Committee on Protection of People at Sea by the Executive Council of the International Law Association. Katarki is a Senior Advocate designated by the Supreme Court of India. He is the Honorary Visiting Professor of Law at Bangalore University’s Law College, and is a well known expert in trans boundary water law on sharing of federal and international river water resources.He has been appointed as a member of the ILA Committe in its recent meeting held at London on 11th November 2023.The International Law Association comprises lawyers, judges and law professors, and plays a pioneering role in the development of international law. The statement on International Law developed by the Committees supported by Special Rapporteur of ILA have commanded highest respect from the international community, particularly the judicial authorities including the International Court of Justice.Membership of the Association, at present around 4500, is spread among Branches throughout the world. The ILA's membership ranges from lawyers in private practice, academia, government and the judiciary, to non-lawyer experts from commercial, industrial and financial spheres, and representatives of bodies such as shipping and arbitration organisations and chambers of commerce.Committe on 'Protection of People at Sea'The objectives of the ILA are primarily pursued through the substantive work of its international committees. There are currently 15 committees on topics as diverse as International Monetary Law, Global Health Law, Space Law, and International Law and Sea Level Rise. Committees are established with a mandate in the first instance of 4 years.The newly established Committee on Protection of People at Sea will address the emerging issue of how to protect all people who are at sea and their human rights. In its first 4 years, it will focus on the jurisdiction of States for the purpose of protecting people at sea. The Committee will work towards advancing knowledge in the field, producing reports, which illustrate the state of the art in this field as well as addressing the current debate, and issuing recommendations that provide guidance to States and other key actors on the scope of their obligations vis-à-vis people at sea. This newly created Committee will allow the ILA to engage with an emerging topic that is attracting more and more attention from scholars and national and international institutions alike and to take a leading role in the development of international law, as has already happened with many other topics addressed by the ILA.
