National Commission For Women Takes Cognizance Of Self-Immolation Incident Outside Supreme Court

The National Commission for Women has taken cognizance of the incident wherein a woman and a man set themselves ablaze outside the Supreme Court on Monday. The press note released by the Commission refers to the media reports which have alleged that the woman had lodged a rape case against MP Atul Rai but the police had issued a non-bailable warrant against her and that before setting herself ablaze, she had mentioned that she was being harassed and threatened by the accused.The National Commission for Women (@NCWIndia) takes cognizance of the incident wherein a woman and a man set themselves ablaze outside Supreme Court.Report sought from Delhi's Commissioner of Police (@DelhiPolice). pic.twitter.com/gpLTUr6Ejp— Live Law (@LiveLawIndia) August 17, 2021In this backdrop, calling it a 'dreadful incident', the commission has taken cognizance of it and NCW's Chairperson, Rekha Sharma has also written to the Director-General of Police, Uttar Pradesh seeking a detailed action taken report of the matter. Importantly, the Commission has also sought an explanation on the necessary action taken by Police to provide her safety and security. NCW has also asked for taking action against erring police officers for dereliction of duty. The reply has to be sent to the Commission at the earliest.Apart from this, the Chairperson has also addressed a letter to the Commissioner of Police, Delhi to conduct a separate inquiry in the matter on the basis of provisions of the law. Also, as both the woman and the man are admitted to Ram Manohar Lohia Hospital of Delhi, the Commission has also asked the authorities to provide all necessary medical and financial assistance to them. "The action taken report must be apprised to the Commission at the earliest," concludes the press release.It may be noted that a man and a woman yesterday attempted suicide outside the Supreme Court by setting themselves on fire, the police said.Adding the reason behind their extreme step was not immediately known, the police said that prima facie the man and woman poured kerosene oil on themselves before setting themselves ablaze.Deputy Commissioner of Police (New Delhi) Deepak Yadav had said that a police team deployed at the spot rushed with blankets to save the man and the woman.The team thereafter managed to douse the fire and immediately took the victims for treatment to the Ram Manohar Lohia Hospital.
