Odisha's First Model Virtual Courtrooms Inaugurated In Angul & Nayagarh By Justice DY Chandrachud

State's first model virtual courtrooms have been inaugurated today by Justice D.Y. Chandrachud, along with the launch of an e-custody certificate system to ensure free access to antecedents of prisoners and automated e-mail services for faster sharing of case information. Dr. Justice S. Muralidhar, Chief Justice of Odisha and other judges of the High Court were present at the event. Justice Chandrachud appreciated the remarkable efforts made by the women District Judges of Nayagarh and Angul in this initiative, adding that 'both are role models for the work that they do for men and women alike across the country'. Justice Chandrachud, currently the Chairman of the Supreme Court e-Committee, emphasized on the dignity that virtual courtroom offers for those who come in contact with it. He went on to say that virtual courtrooms shall 'herald a new symbol in the Indian Judiciary.' E-custody certificate system will prove beneficial for justice administration and hence, it is ideal to replicate the same in other states, continued Justice Chandrachud. Justice S. Muralidhar commented on the flexibility rendered by the hybrid functioning feature of virtual courtrooms that enable anyone involved in the proceedings to opt for physical/virtual appearance without disrupting the trial. He added that the expeditious disposal of cases require fully equipped virtual courtrooms in every district, which will help diminish the limitations of physically examining case witnesses residing far away. He also explained how this innovative step will allow multiple courts to schedule the virtual hearing of cases if needed. The welcome address for the event was delivered by Justice Biswajit Mohanty, Odisha High Court, who is also the chairman of the High Court's IT Committee. Justice Sangam Kumar Sahoo, Judge, Odisha High Court, concluded the event by extending the vote of thanks. Various government functionaries, judicial officers and advocates also took part in the event through video conferencing.
