The Orissa High Court on Thursday intimated that the administrative side of the Court is taking necessary steps on the issue pertaining to use of A4 sheets for filings before judicial forums in the state.

A Bench of Chief Justice Mohammad Rafiq and Justice Dr. BR Sarangi made this observation while disposing of a PIL seeking permission for use of A4 sheets in the High Court and all other judicial forums in Orissa.

The Court said that since the administrative section is already deliberating on the issue, it is appropriate to dispose of the PIL in those terms.

    The order states,

"This Court has been informed that the High Court, in administrative side, is already seisin on the matter and taking necessary steps. Therefore, we deem it appropriate not to keep this matter pending unnecessarily. This writ petition is accordingly disposed of."

The Petitioner had sought necessary amendments to Rule 4(i) under Chapter-VI of Part-II of the Rules of the High Court of Orissa, 1948 so as to give effect to directions for the use of A4 size paper in the Orissa High Court; and also in all other courts, tribunals and other judicial and quasi-judicial forums, sub-ordinate to it in the State of Odisha.

The Petitioner had asserted that the move will not only protect the environment by minimizing the wastage of papers but will also bring uniformity in all Courts.
