Citing persistent technical glitches in the UMEED portal, all five Punjab Waqf Tribunals covering the entire state have extended the timeline for registering waqf properties, and have granted an extension for registration on the UMEED Central Portal on the application filed by the Punjab Sunni Waqf Board.

In an order passed on December 5, the Jalandhar Waqf Tribunal stated that, "major chunk of details of properties already has been uploaded be the Wag Board pertaining ot the properties of Districts Armritsar, Hosharpur, Jalandhar, Kapurthala and Gurdaspur. Only a small part thereof...remains to be uploaded. As per application, these properties could not be uploaded due to technical glitches. Proviso of Section 3B of Unified Waqf Management, Empowerment, Efficiency and Development Act, 1995, envisages that Tribunal may extend the period of six months for a further period not excceding six months if the Tribunal is satisfied that there was sufficient cause of not filing the details of the Waqf on the portal within the given period."

It noted that sufficient cause is shown when correspondence on the title and contents of the application reveals continuous efforts by the applicant Board in completing the uploading before 05.12.2025, but for the technical glitches.

On an application filed by the Chief Executive Officer of the Punjab Waqf Board, all the Tribunals in Punjab covering all the districts have extended the time, considering the technical glitches, stated Additional Law Officer Sheeba Khan.

In fact, the tribunals in Ferozepur and Patiala issued similar orders, taking into account technical glitches on the portal, including an incorrect Bigha-to-Acre auto-calculation and the location error ['Rural' properties incorrectly auto-save as 'Urban'], etc.

It may be noted that while the Jalandhar Waqf Tribunal has granted two months' time (Till February 5, 2026) to complete uploading, the Tribunals in Ferozepur and Patiala granted six months' time. Furthermore, the tribunals in Faridkot granted two months, and Rupnagar extended the time only till December 18.

For context, as per the newly inserted Section 3B of 2025 Act, it is mandatory for every waqf to file the details of the waqf and the property dedicated to the waqf on the portal and database within a period of 6 months from the date of its commencement and the last date for filing the details on the portal and database has expired on December 6.

Recently, the UP State Waqf Tribunal also granted a six-month extension for registration on the UMEED Central Portal on the petition filed by the UP Sunni Waqf Board.
