In his resignation letter, addressed to the Governor of Punjab, Patwalia has said that he was resigning in view of the Long-Standing Constitutional convention.

Senior Advocate Deepinder Singh Patwalia was appointed as the Advocate General of Punjab in November 2021, days after Senior Advocate Amar Preet Singh Deol had resigned from the post of AG, following acceptance of the same by the then Punjab Chief Minister, Charanjit Singh Channi.

Senior Advocate Amar Preet Singh Deol was appointed as the new Advocate General of Punjab following Senior Advocate Atul Nanda resigned from the post of AG on September 18 citing constitutional convention and highlighting that his appointment was co-terminus with the chief minister's appointment.

Prior to his appointment as AG, Patwalia practiced on the Constitutional side and has also dealt with service and criminal matters. He is the son of former Supreme Court judge Justice Kuldeep Singh. His mother served as the Principal of Mohali Rajkiya Mahila College.
