The court of Judicial Commissioner (JC) here on Wednesday convicted 11 persons in connection with gang rape of a student of National University of Study and Research in Law near Ranchi city in November last year.

The convicted persons are Sunil Munda, Sandip Tirkey, Ajay Munda, Rajan Oroan, Kuldip Oraon, Sunil Oraon, Naveen Oraon, Basant Kacchap, Ravi Oraon, Rohit Oraon and Rishi Tirkey.

Amidst a packed court the JC Navneet Kumar read out his judgment convicting them under 376 D, 366, 342, 379, 411, 323 and 120 B of Indian Penal Code. The convicts lodged in Birsa Munda Central jail were produced in court through video-conferencing. The argument on point of sentencing would take place on Monday.

It may be noted here that the victim and her friend were standing at a bus stop near Sangrampur village when the convicts arrived at the spot and forcibly took her away. They committed the crime despite resistance put up by the victim and then fled away.

After getting information the police arrested 12 persons involved in the crime but one of them turned out to be minor (17 years) during the trial. His case was referred to the juvenile justice board. The trail of the remaining 11 accused was carried out on day-to- day basis on the instruction of Jharkhand High Court.

Public Prosecutor Anil Kumar Singh said, "The prosecution side produced 21 witnesses. The oral evidence including statements of the victim and her friend, the medical evidences, DNA profiles and also the call detail recordings and the tower location of the accused persons were produced to establish the allegations during the trial".

Several lawyers of city including former general secretary of Ranchi District Bar Association Sanjay Vidrohi welcomed the court's verdict.
