The Orissa High Court, under the leadership of Chief Justice Dr. S. Muralidhar, will observe the 'first anniversary' of the Record Room Digitisation Centre ('RRDC') on 9th September 2022 (Friday). The second senior-most Judge of the Apex Court and the Chairperson of the Supreme Court E-Committee Dr. Justice D.Y. Chandrachud will be gracing the occasion as the Chief Guest in virtual mode.

Notably, the Centre was inaugurated by Justice Chandrachud in September last year with the vision to digitise case records of the State, some of which date back to the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries. While speaking on the inauguration, Chief Justice Muralidhar had said,

"This again is building upon past learning. We have already initiated record digitisation in the 4 major districts of Odisha. It has become a necessity. With more and more space that we need at all levels for the storage of all legal records, we thought we cannot delay this initiative for even a short while. We have this wonderful building, with the assistance of the state government, where we have been able to have a modern record room. We have combined this with shortening the retention time for some original records in various kinds of matters. We have also made sure that it is a seamless process – preservation of records, sending it for scanning, verification, returning back to the record room; it is like an assembly line. We are trying to modernise it."

Pertinent to note, the Centre is a unique initiative by the Orissa High Court to promote e-Courts and paperless Courts. A Committee is formed namely 'the RRDC Committee', which devises road-maps for the Centre, under the Chairmanship of a sitting High Court Judge. The Centre works under the supervision of the Registrar (Records), who is an officer in the cadre of District Judge.

The event will see presentation by the Registrar (Records) about the file flow and the figures for digitisation, preservation and destruction of case records achieved by the RRDC in the last one year.
