How Many Police Stations In The State Aren't Having Toilets For Women? : Allahabad High Court Asks Uttar Pradesh Govt.

A plea has been filed before the Allahabad High Court by the students of various Law Colleges, seeking direction to the Uttar Pradesh Government to ensure the construction of ladies' toilets in the Police Stations where it is not constructed. The plea has also sought direction that the State Government such ensure that such toilets have all the necessary facilities like toiletries running water, electricity, fan, doorknob with keeping in view the privacy and dignity of women. While hearing the matter on Wednesday (03rd February), the Bench of Justice Jayant Banerji and Justice Sanjay Yadav directed the Standing Counsel appearing for the State Government to seek instructions and also place status report as to how many Police Stations in the State are not having toilets for women. Prayers of the Plea Direction to the respondents to complete the semi constructed/damaged/incomplete toilets in the Police Stations of Allahabad City.After building such toilets, they should provide basic facilities like toiletries, running water, electricity, doorknob with keeping in mind the privacy and dignity of women. Direction to the respondents no.5, Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) to constitute a monitoring committee headed by a women police officer and consisting of Police Inspector, SI, Constable for the inspection of the toilets in the police stations in the Allahabad city and place its report before the SSP Allahabad periodically under the monitoring of the High Court. Direction to the the Respondent no.1 and 2 State of Uttar Pradesh Through Principal Secretary (Home) Lucknow and Director General of Police (DGP), Lucknow, Uttar Pradesh to make sufficient budgetary allocation for the construction and maintenance of washrooms and toilets in the police stations. The matter has been directed to be listed as fresh in the week commencing 15th February 2021. It may be noted that as per a report titled 'Status of Policing in India Report 2019', 20 per cent policewomen complained of lack of women toilets in police stations (the survey had covered close to 12,000 police personnel across 21 States.). As per this report (which was released in December 2019), the State of Uttar Pradesh ranked fourth in terms of lack or bad condition of women toilets.
