    In a remarkable move, lawyer Ankani Biswas, a transgender person has been empanelled as an Advocate in the Legal Services Authority, West Bengal on July 28.

    The decision was taken by Acting Chief Justice of the Calcutta High Court Justice Rajesh Bindal who is also the Patron-in-Chief and Executive Chairman of the West Bengal State Legal Services Authority.

    Advocate Biswas will be the first Transgender person to be empanelled as a lawyer in the Panel of the Legal Services Authority.

    Recently, Karnataka became the first State in the country to provide 1 percent horizontal reservation for transgender persons in government jobs. Further, the Kerala High Court in March 2021 pronounced a landmark decision allowing transgender persons to be recruited in the National Cadet Corps (NCC). 

    The Bihar government in February 2021 informed the Patna High Court that it was going to create a separate unit of Transgender Police Personnel at the District level in order to further representation of the community.
