The Allahabad High Court has asked the Member of Parliament from Rampur and senior Samajwadi Party leader, Azam Khan as to whether he wishes to engage any counsel to represent him in the instant bail cancellation application filed by the UP Government or an amicus-curiae be appointed on his behalf.

On Wednesday, the Bench of Justice Rajiv Gupta directed that a notice be sent to Mohd. Azam Khan through the Superintendent, District Jail, Sitapur, where he is currently lodged.

Issuing the notice, the High Court has posted the matter for further hearing on February 21.

It may be noted an application has been filed on behalf of the state government seeking cancellation of bail granted to Khan in many cases. Khan is facing around 100 criminal cases, some of which are pending in court and he has secured bail in most of the cases.

Khan was arrested along with his son and wife in February 2020 in connection with cases against him of land grabbing, encroachment, and providing fake birth certificates.

However, since he hasn't been granted bail in the Jauhar University case, Khan is still behind the bars. He has recently moved to the Supreme Court seeking interim bail so that he can participate in the upcoming Uttar Pradesh Assembly Polls 2022.

Before the Supreme Court, he has submitted that he has been granted bail in all other cases, but, proceedings in three cases are "purposefully" being delayed so as to ensure that he is not able to come out of the prison during the Assembly Elections. The Supreme Court today adjourned the hearing on his plea.
