The Supreme Court has extended the deadline for the mop-up round of counseling, which is the final round, for NEET examination to September 7 for admission to MBBS and BDS courses in deemed universities.

The earlier deadline was August 31. The order comes as a big relief to students who had cleared the NEET examination, but could not get through in first two rounds. The order of the apex court is only with respect to deemed universities.

"Time for mop-up round counselling is extended till 7. 9.2017. This extension shall only be applicable to the deemed universities and none else," a bench of Chief Justice Dipak Misra, Justice AM Khanwilkar and Justice DY Chandrachud said.

It expressly stated that it would not entertain any application for extension from any other varsity. It was also urged on behalf of the deemed universities that if need be and in order to maintain the ratio of 1:10, in case of deficit in the list meant for deemed universities, the names from the larger NEET list may be provided.

The court was informed that 5,500 seats have fallen vacant. "As long as for the seats which have fallen vacant, the ratio is maintained at 1:10, we do not perceive any difficulty. If 1:10 ratio is not sufficient, the Director General of Health Services is granted liberty to get into the larger NEET list," the bench ordered. The Supreme Court had last year ordered in favour of single NEET for admission to MBBS and BDS courses.
