Taking note of the restricted functioning imposed by COVID-19 lockdown, the Supreme Court on Friday decided to curtail the summer vacation, and decided to have regular functioning till June 19.

The top court conducted a full court meeting through "circulation of views" which was of the view that work should continue as much as possible, at least till June 19, 2020.

A full court meeting through circulation of views took place and the Chief Justice SA Bobde, in concurrence with Judges, decided not to avail summer vacation at least till June 19. This means that the summer vacation will be restricted to two weeks, instead of the usual approximately 45 days of Court Vacations every year.

As per calendar, the top court was set to go into summer recess from May 15 to July 6.

Earlier, the SC Bar Association had appealed to the CJI to cancel the summer vacations in view of the loss of normal working days due to COVID-19 and the subsequent lockdown.

The SC had been functioning in a restricted fashion since March 13, taking up only urgent matters.

After the declaration of nationwide lockdown on March 24, the Court moved to hearings via video conferencing.

Live Law also reached out to sources who suggested that the Court may notify five benches from May 18 for taking up all kinds of matters.
