The President of India promulgated on Wednesday the "Salary, Allowances & Pension of Members of Parliament (Amendment) Ordinance 2020" to reduce salary payable to Members of Parliament by 30% for one year with effect from April 1, 2020, to raise resources to prevent spread of COVID-19.

The Ordinance inserts sub-section (1A) in Section 3A of the "Salary, Allowances & Pension of Members of Parliament Act 1954" to state :

"Notwithstanding anything contained in sub-section (1), the salary payable to Members of Parliament under sub-section (1) shall be reduced by thirty percent for a period of one year commencing from the 1st April 2020 to meet the exigencies arising out of Corona Virus (COVID-19) pandemic".

Since the Parliament is not in session, the President promulgated the Ordinance in exercise of powers under Article 123 of the Constitution of India.

In 2018, the Salary, Allowances & Pension of Members of Parliament Act 1954 was amended to provide 100% hike in the salaries of MPs.

Following that amendment, the basic salary of MPs was revised from Rs 50,000 to Rs 1,00,000 per month, while pension has been revised from Rs 20,000 per month to Rs 25,000 per month.
