Chief Justice Of Kenya Lauds India's Ability To Translate Judgments Using AI

A delegation of the Supreme Court of Kenya, led by Chief Justice of the Supreme Court of Kenya, Justice Martha K. Koome, EGH, called on President of India, Smt Droupadi Murmu at Rashtrapati Bhavan today and held discussions with Professor SP Singh Baghel, the Minister of State for Law and Justice and the officials of the Ministry.

After the discussions, the Kenyan Chief Justice lauded the ability of the Indian judiciary to translate judgments using Artificial Intelligence. Recently, Chief Justice of India DY Chandrachud had launched the mission to translate the judgments of the Supreme Court into regional languages using AI with the objective of making justice more accessible to common people. CJI Chandrachud had said that English in its legal avatar was not comprehensible to 99.9% of the citizens.

Following the Supreme Court, many High Courts also started publishing translations of the judgments written in English.

"We are impressed that India has the ability to translate judgments through emerging technology like Artificial Intelligence", the Kenyan Chief Justice said.

"Kenya and India share unique challenges which call for unique innovations to secure access to justice such as eCourts and eFiling systems. We have agreed to collaborate in the areas of judicial training, geospatial mapping of Judiciary infrastructure, enhancement of ICT and people centred justice solutions", Chief Justice Martha K. Koome tweeted from her official handle.

Welcoming the delegation to Rashtrapati Bhavan, the President said that Kenya is a country with which India has centuries -old friendly relations. The President noted that Justice Koome is the first woman Chief Justice of the Kenyan Supreme Court. She commended her efforts for making justice accessible to all and to empower women in Kenya.

Chief Justice Martha K Koome said that she was honoured to meet the Indian President on the International Day of Women Judges.

"This year's International Day of Women Judges reaffirms that we must continue to advocate for more women in justice for justice. We must build a conscious south-south movement of women leaders to secure, champion and nurture intergenerational co-leadership. I celebrate all women jurists in Kenya, the global south and around the world and extend my assurance to continue paving the way for more women and girls to occupy the highest positions in law and justice. Together, we will address the special justice needs of women and girls, especially in the area of Sexual and Gender Based Violence", the Chief Justice of Kenya tweeted.

Later in the day, Minister of State (Law and Justice) Professor SP Singh Baghel, along with the officials of the Ministry, interacted with the delegation led by the Chief Justice of Kenya.

Detailing on the constitutional provisions concerning Appointments of Judges in the Judiciary, Sh. Rajinder Kashyap, Add. Secretary, DoJ also briefed about Judicial Infrastructure Scheme, eCourts & other initiatives of Department of Justice, that made Access to Justice easier.

Dr. Rajiv Mani, Addl. Secy, Dept. of Legal Affairs, explained working of the Dept., mentioned functioning of Law Commission of India, briefed initiatives including ADR, Mediation Bill, also echoed MoS's invitation to take benefit of IIAC for trade-related disputes.

Dr. Reeta Vasishtha, Secretary, Legislative Department, explained working of the department and mentioned how it assists Election Commission of India in procurement of EVMs, VVPAT and in bringing transparency in electoral process; also detailed upon research on drafting laws.
