The Chief Justice of India (CJI) NV Ramana on Saturday said that resolutions have been passed at the Joint Conference of Chief Ministers of States and the Chief Justices for the creation of National Judicial Infrastructure Authority of India along with complementary State Bodies as a special purpose vehicle for the creation of judicial infrastructure.

The authority is being created as chief coordinator and driving force for augmentation, creation of judicial infrastructure as per the Chief Justice of India's proposal to the Government.
The CJI further said that, pursuant to a request made by the Chief Justices of High Courts and Chief Ministers of different States, another resolution has been passed for giving an infrastructure fund to the states as a one-time measure.

Union Law Minister Kiren Rijiju said that many Chief Ministers did not agree to the present proposed set-up of the National Judicial Infrastructure Development Authority.
"They(Chief Ministers) were saying that the committee may be constituted at the state level, rather than the national level because the implementation as well execution of the works lies with the state govt at the state level", the Minister said.
"The CMs & Chief Justice have agreed that the body will be created at the state level with the involvement of the CMs & Chief Justices or their nominees", the Minister added.

In October last year, while speaking at a public event, the CJI had said that he has sent a proposal for the establishment of the National Judicial Infrastructure Authority to the Ministry of Law and Justice.
The CJI had then urged the Minister of Law and Justice to expedite the process and ensure that the proposal to create the National Judicial Infrastructure Authority of India (NJIAI) with statutory backing is taken up in the Winter Session of the Parliament.
"Institutionalising the mechanism for augmenting and creating state-of-the-art judicial infrastructure is the best gift that we can think of giving to our people and our country in this 75th year of our Independence," the CJI had said.
During the Constitution day celebrations last year, the CJI has emphasised on the need for creation of National Judicial Infrastructure authority to properly allocate budgetary funds for infrastructural development.
