    The Common Law Admission Test 2021 (CLAT 2021) will be held on May 9, in offline mode, announces a notification issued by the Consortium of National Law Universities.

    On account of the prevailing COVID situation, the notification, however, adds that the offline conduct of the exam will be "subject to revision in case of necessity".

    Online applications for the exam will be available from January 1, 2021. The last date for submission of online applications is March 31, 2021.

    Those students who secured 45% marks or higher in their 10+2 exams will be eligible to appear for CLAT 2021. The cut-off is 40% for Scheduled Caste/Scheduled Tribe candidates.

    The application fee for the exam is Rs. 4,000 (Rs. 3,500 for SC/ST candidates).

    This year, the examination was earlier scheduled to be conducted on 7th September, 2020. However, the same stood postponed on assessment of the prevailing lockdown situation in various parts of the country, particularly the lockdown announced in the state of West Bengal for 7th September and continued lockdown in the state of Bihar until 6th September. The CLAT 2020 examination for both UG and PG candidates was finally held on 28th September, 2020 from 2 to 4 PM.

    Delhi High Court had in September dismissed a plea seeking a home-based exam for CLAT 2020.

    While dismissing the petition, the Single Bench of Justice Jayant Nath noted that home-based exams may not be appropriate for approximately 78,000 candidates who are to take the exam.

    The court further observed that the possibility of the exams being compromised or manipulated by the participants/coaching centers cannot be ruled out.

    The Consortium of National Law Universities had issued instructions for candidates appearing in the Common Law Admission Test 2020 examination, which was held in off-line mode. It had been clarified that those candidates who have tested positive for Covid-19 and are under medical surveillance will not be permitted to take the examination.

    Subsequently, the Supreme Court had allowed a Covid Infected CLAT aspirants to appear in the entrance exam in an isolation room at the examination centre.

    The Governing Body of Consortium of National Law Universities in November unanimously elected Professor (Dr.) Vijender Kumar, Vice-chancellor of Maharashtra National Law University, Nagpur as the convener of Common Law Admission Test (CLAT) 2021.

    Kumar succeeds Prof. Balraj Chauhan who served as convener of CLAT 2020 which witnessed the withdrawal of National Law School of India University, Bengaluru (NLSIU) from the consortium leading to chaos and eventually culminating in litigation before the Supreme Court.

    National Academy of Legal Studies and Research (NALSAR) Vice-Chancellor professor Faizan Mustafa has been elected as the president of the Consortium of National Law Universities.

    The consortium unanimously elected him as the president at its annual meeting.

    Professor Poonam Saxena, Vice-Chancellor, NLU Jodhpur, has been elected the Vice President; Common Law Admission Test (CLAT) 2021; and professor V.C. Vivekanandan, Vice-Chancellor, HNLU, Raipur, as the member of the executive committee for CLAT-2021.
