Plea In Supreme Court Seeks Inquiry By NIA To Find The Truth About Protests That Took Place In Delhi On Republic Day

A plea has been filed before the Supreme Court for directions to the National Investigation Agency to conduct an inquiry into the protests which took place in Delhi on Republic Day ,26th January, 2021. The plea further prays for the formulation of strict rules and guidelines "against agitation and procession by political parties or any organization religious or non-religious all over India". It also seeks for a ban against processions or agitations in favour of the three contentious farm laws till the matter is decided by the Supreme Court. Filed by AOR Narender Kumar Verma on behalf of social activist KK Ramesh, the plea recounts the events which took place on Republic Day, starting from the farmers' protest to the suppression of the same by the police, which led to the death of one protestor, with dozens of protestors and police being injured. "That the Petitioner states, Mobile internet services were suspended in parts of Delhi and some metro stations closed. As the clashes continued into the afternoon, the undesirable and unacceptable events that have taken place on 26.1.2021". The plea goes on to highlight that there are budding concerns in the country that attempts are being made by "extremists and Khalistani elements to influence the decision-making process and polity in Canada and UK on the farmer protest issue" wherein allegedly the protestors raised anti-India and pro-farmer slogans. After highlighting Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau's support for the farmers and referencing instances wherein UK Parliamentarians were supposedly seen in company of Sikh extremists, the plea also attempts to contend that "some state and national political parties and some anti-social organisations with the help of foreign hands are inducing innocent people by paying money and biryani and encouraging them to do agitation and riot all over India". In light of the above, the plea seeks for an inquiry by the NIA into the "truth" of what happened on Republic Day, amongst other things.
