The Supreme Court of India on Tuesday listed religious leader Swami Avimukteshwaranand Saraswati's PIL pertaining to the recent land sinking incidents in Joshimath on 16th January 2023.

The PIL seeks for Joshimath to be declared as a National Disaster and direct the NDMA to actively support the residents of Joshimath. The plea has also prayed for financial assistance and compensation to the residents of Joshimath. The matter was mentioned before a bench comprising CJI DY Chandrachud and Justice PS Narasimha.

The counsel asked for the matter to be listed tomorrow stating that it was quite urgent. To this, CJI DY Chandrachud stated–

"Everything which is important in the country need not come to us. There are democratically elected institutions to see this. They can deal with what falls under their control. We'll keep it on 16th."

Joshimath has been declared a 'sinking zone' in the wake of continuing land subsidence, with several homes and roads developing cracks over the last few days, driving residents outdoors and triggering fear. Over 60 families living in damaged houses in the sinking town have been evacuated to temporary relief centres.
