Karur Stampede : Supreme Court To Pass Orders On Pleas Of TVK & Others On Monday

The Supreme Court will pronounce its orders on Monday, October 13, on a batch of petitions seeking an independent investigation into the Karur stampede incident.A bench comprising Justice JK Maheshwari and Justice NV Anjaria reserved its order on Friday after hearing arguments from multiple petitioners, including Vijay's political party Tamizhaga Vetri Kazhagam (TVK), which has sought a probe under the supervision of a retired Supreme Court judge.Other petitioners have requested that the investigation be handed over to the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI), expressing doubts over the impartiality of the ongoing inquiry by the Tamil Nadu Police.The stampede, which occurred on September 27 during a rally by Vijay's party, claimed 41 lives.Vijay's party has challenged the Madras High Court's order which constituted a Special Investigation Team comprising of officers from the Tamil Nadu police. According to the TVK, a fair probe cannot be ensured by the State police.The other petitioners have challenged the order passed by the Madurai Bench of the Madras High Court rejecting the plea to transfer the investigation to the CBI.During the hearing on Friday, the bench led by Justice Maheshwari raised questions at the manner in which the Madras High Court passed the order for SIT. The bench observed that the direction was passed in a petition which was seeking an SOP for political rallies. The bench also asked how the Chennai bench could have entertained the matter when Karur fell within the jurisdiction of the Madurai bench.The bench also asked the State why permission was granted for the rally on September 27. The bench further questioned how post-mortems of all victims were completed within a few hours on the night of the incident itself.
