Breaking | Kunal Kamra Gets Interim Anticipatory Bail From Madras High Court In Mumbai Police FIR Over Satire Video

The Madras High Court has granted interim anticipatory bail till April 7 to Kunal Kamra in connection with the FIR lodged against him at Mumbai over his alleged remarks against Maharashtra Deputy CM Eknath Shinde. Kamra has been asked to execute the bail bond before the jurisdictional Magistrate. Though the FIR is lodged in Mumbais's Khar police station, Kamra being a resident of Tamilnadu had approached the High Court there. His counsel V Suresh pressed for urgent relief citing multiple death threats Kamra received, after airing of his new stand-up video 'Naya Bharat'.Justice Sunder Mohan said he is prima facie satisfied that Kamra is unable to approach the courts in Maharashtra for protection. The court was thus inclined to grant interim anticipatory bail. The court has allowed private notice to the Khar Police Station (2nd respondent in the case). "In the meanwhile, this Court deems it appropriate to grant an interim protection. Accordingly, the petitioner is granted interim anticipatory bail on the condition that he executes a bond for a sum of Rs.10,000/- [Rupees Ten Thousand Only] to the satisfaction of the learned Judicial Magistrate with two sureties, each for a like sum to the satisfaction of the said learned Magistrate," the court said.Kamra had approached the High Court seeking transit anticipatory bail in connection with the FIR lodged against him at Mumbai over his alleged remarks against Maharashtra Deputy CM Eknath Shinde. He is a permanent resident of Villupuram town in Tamilnadu and claimed that Madras High Court has jurisdiction in the matter. The plea was taken up after an urgent mentioning in the morning.A Zero FIR was lodged against Kamra under Sections 353(1)(b), 353(2) [Public mischief] and 356(2) [Defamation] BNS by Shiv Sena MLA Muraji Patel. The FIR was later transferred to Khar police station in Mumbai. Though Kamra had not directly taken the Deputy Chief Minister Eknath Shinde's name, the party workers allege that he had called Shinde a traitor while referencing to his split from the Shiv Sena. Offended by Kamra's remarks, a group of Shiv Sena workers had also vandalised Mumbai's Habitat studio, where the comedian had performed the show. Twelve people were arrested in connection with the violence that had erupted and were subsequently granted bail.Kamra was represented by Advocates V Suresh and Advocate Ashwin Thool.
