[Live Updates] : Rajya Sabha Debate On Citizenship Amendment Bill

Without seeing that the bill is giving benefits to people belonging to six religions, critics are highlighting the omission of Islam : Shah 

This bill is to address the issues of religious minorities in Islamic states sharing border with India. There can be different laws for addressing different issues : Shah 

India has honored its commitment to protect minorities. Persons belonging to minority communities have become President, CJI, Speaker and occupied high offices. But our neighbors have not kept the promise to protect minorities : Shah 

The partition of the country on the basis of religion is the reason for this #CABBill : Shah

The #CABBill is constitutional, legal, is in the national interests and subserves a larger humanitarian purpose : Law Minister R S Prasad

RS Prasad says that the #CABBill is actually fulfilling the right to dignity of the specified minorities in terms of Article 21 by easing their route to Indian citizenship

The groups identified in the #CABBill are facing oppression; there is an intelligible differentia in the classification. The classification has nexus with the objective of the #CitizenshipAmendmentBill which is to give shelter to specified persecuted minorities says 

Law Minister Ravi Shankar Prasad quotes from a 2003 SC judgment, which stated that Article 14 permits reasonable classification based on intelligible differentia which has a nexus with the object sought to be achieved.

Responding to the queries of Chidambaram and Sibal , Union Law Minister Ravi Shankar Prasad says that all bills tabled by the Government are vetted by the Law Ministry.
