The makers of the animation movie 'Mahaprabhu Jagannath' approached the Supreme Court challenging the Orissa High Court's order banning the countrywide release of the film.

Senior Advocate Devadatt Kamat made an urgent mention of the matter before the Chief Justice of India, requesting a hearing today itself, as the film was slated for release tomorrow. CJI Surya Kant, however declined listing for today, and assured that it will be taken up tomorrow.

Kamat submitted that the film was an animation movie about Lord Jagannath meant for children, and the High Court banned its release, saying that the film was not made as per the 'Skanda Purana'. He added that the Central Board of Film Certification has already cleared the film by giving it a certificate as per Section 5 of the Cinematograph Act. He informed that the High Court's order was uploaded yesterday at 9 PM, and the ban order would result in immense prejudice and hardship for the producer, who has invested crores of rupees. Over 300 theatres were chartered for the screening of the film, the senior counsel stated, urging for a hearing today itself.

He added that the Public Interest Litigation in the High Court was passed just before the release, and the High Court passed a hasty order banning the movie pan-India.

The Chief Justice however said that same-day listing can be given for extremely urgent matters like death penalty execution.
