No Proposal To Bring Advocates Under Consumer Protection Act 2019, Clarifies Union Minister

There is no proposal to include Advocates under the Consumer Protection Act 2019, clarified Union Minister for Consumer Affairs Ram Vilas Paswan on Friday.The Minister stated in Twitter that there was no proposal to include legal services in the Consumer Protection Rules, or to change the definition of 'services' under the Consumer Protection Act 2019. This was in response to the letters sent by Bar Council of India Chairman Senior Advocate Manan Kumar Mishra, Co-Chairman Adv V P Sharma and Bar Council of Delhi Chairman Adv K C Mittal.Shri K.C. Mittal, Advocate & Chairman, Bar Coucil of Delhi has written a letter on 9.3.2020 which was received on 11.3.2020 & Shri Manan Kumar Mishra, Chairman, Shri VP Sharma, Co-Chairman, Bar Council of India have also written on 11.3.2020 which has been received today. 1/4— Ram Vilas Paswan (@irvpaswan) March 13, 2020wherein it has been mentioned that my Ministry is framing rules under the Consumer Protection Act, 2019 to include legal services. The BCI had warned that legal fraternity "will protest on roads" if such a thing happened.On March 12, the Delhi High Court Bar Association wore "white arm bands" as a display of protest against the proposal to include advocates under the ambit of 'service providers' under the Consumer Protection Act, 2019.
