Mukesh Ambani's Reliance Industries, Others Seek Trademark Registration Of 'Operation Sindoor'

Mukesh Ambani owned Reliance Industries has moved an application before the Trade Marks Registry on Wednesday (May 7) seeking registration of 'Operation Sindoor' as a work mark. The registration of the term has been sought for 'goods and services' under Class 41 which covers education and entertainment services. Meanwhile three other individuals have also applied for registration of the term–Mukesh Chetram Agrawal, Group Captain Kamal Singh Oberh (Retd), and Alok Kothari. 'Operation Sindoor' was an operation launched by the Indian armed forces in the intervening night of May 6-7 targeting terror camps in Pakistan and Pakistan-occupied-Kashmir. This comes in the wake of the Pahalgam terror attack where 25 Indians were killed. A press release issued by the Ministry of Defence in the early hours of May 7 stated:"A little while ago, the Indian Armed Forces launched 'OPERATION SINDOOR', hitting terrorist infrastructure in Pakistan and Pakistan-occupied Jammu and Kashmir from where terrorist attacks against India have been planned and directed. Altogether, nine (9) sites have been targeted. Our actions have been focused, measured and non-escalatory in nature. No Pakistani military facilities have been targeted. India has demonstrated considerable restraint in selection of targets and method of execution.These steps come in the wake of the barbaric Pahalgam terrorist attack in which 25 Indians and one Nepali citizen were murdered. We are living up to the commitment that those responsible for this attack will be held accountable".Update: After the news caused public outrage, Reliance announced that they are withdrawing the trademark application. The company took to Twitter and said,"Reliance Industries has no intention of trademarking Operation Sindoor, a phrase which is now a part of the national consciousness as an evocative symbol of Indian bravery. Jio Studios, a unit of Reliance Industries, has withdrawn its trademark application, which was filed inadvertently by a junior person without authorisation.Reliance Industries and all its stakeholders are incredibly proud of Operation Sindoor, which came about in response to a Pakistan-sponsored terrorist attack in Pahalgam. Operation Sindoor is the proud achievement of our brave Armed Forces in India's uncompromising fight against the evil of terrorism. Reliance stands fully in support of our Government and Armed Forces in this fight against terrorism. Our commitment to the motto of 'INDIA FIRST' remains unwavering."
