Pune Porsche Case | Supreme Court Grants Bail To Sassoon Hospital Doctor Accused Of Swapping Blood Samples

The Supreme Court today granted bail to Sassoon Hospital doctor Ajay Aniruddha Taware, booked for allegedly conspiring to swap blood samples of the minor occupants of the Porsche car involved in the May 19, 2024 accident in Pune that led to the death of two persons.A bench of Justice BV Nagarathna and Justice Ujjal Bhuyan granted bail on the basis of parity with Taware's co-accused Ashish Mittal, Aditya Sood, Amar Gaikwad, and Arunkumar Singh who were granted bail earlier this month.“The aforesaid observations and directions (in bail orders of the co-accused) apply squarely in the present case also. Ordered accordingly. The appeal is allowed and disposed of in the aforesaid terms”, the Court stated.Dr. Taware is the former Head of Forensic Medicine of Sassoon Hospital, Pune. He allegedly conspired with other accused, including hospital staff and associates of the minor driver's family, to falsify medical records. The prosecution has alleged that Dr. Taware, along with Dr. Shrihari Halnor, facilitated the swapping of the minor driver's blood sample with those of other individuals (including the driver's mother and acquaintances) to show “nil alcohol” levels. False entries were allegedly made in the hospital's MLC register, medical certificates, and labels on blood samples to mislead investigators. It is alleged that Dr. Taware along with Dr. Halnor accepted bribe of Rs. 3,00,000 through middlemen to carry out the tampering.Before the Supreme Court, Senior Advocate Siddharth Dave for Taware contended that Taware was on leave on the day of the alleged offence. He further highlighted that the Court has granted bail to other co-accused and sought parity with them.State of Maharashtra has alleged that Taware was a co-conspirator, and other accused acted under his instructions given. BackgroundDr. Taware challenged the December 16, 2025 judgment of the Bombay High Court which rejected his bail application along with those of several co-accused in a case under Sections 304, 279, 337, 338, 427, 120-B, 201, 213, 214, 466, 467, 468, 471, 109 read with Section 34 of the IPC, Sections 7, 7-A, 8, 12, 13 of the Prevention of Corruption Act, 1988 and various Sections of the Motor Vehicles Act.According to the prosecution, at about 2.10 AM on May 19, 2024, a minor was driving a Porsche car near Kalyani Nagar on Airport Road when it rammed a motorcycle from behind. The rider and pillion - of Anis Awadhiya and Ashwini Koshta - rider sustained fatal injuries.It is alleged that soon after the accident, a criminal conspiracy was hatched to cause disappearance of evidence and secure a “Nil alcohol” report in favour of the minor driver and his friends, in order to shield him from charges under section 304 of IPC (culpable homicide not amounting to murder).The prosecution has alleged that blood samples of the minor allegedly driving the car and the other occupants of the car were swapped with those of Shivani Agarwal, Ashish Mittal and Aditya Sood at Sassoon Hospital, and that false entries were made in medical records.The High Court denied bail to eight accused including Taware, observing that were not only duty bound but also aware that they should support the police for proper investigation for collection of the evidence and still became ready to tamper with and cause disappearance of the evidence for money. The Supreme Court recently granted bail to three co-accused – Ashish Satish Mittal, Aditya Avinash Sood and Amar Santhosh Gaikwad – noting that they had undergone about 18 months of incarceration. They are alleged to have swapped the blood samples of two minor occupants seated in the back of the car with their own samples.Justice Nagarathna, while granting bail, made strong oral observations on parental responsibility.Earlier this week, the Court issued notice on bail plea of Vishal Agarwal, father of the minor alleged to have been driving the Porsche car.Case no. – Crl.
