The State of Uttar Pradesh informed the Supreme Court on Monday that the chargesheet in the Ayodhya Ram Mandir donation theft case will be filed within two days.

Solicitor General of India Tushar Mehta made this statement before a bench comprising Chief Justice of India Surya Kant, Justice Joymalya Bagchi and Justice V Mohana, which was hearing a bunch of petitions seeking independent investigation into the scam.

SG Mehta said that the period of ninety days from the date of the first arrest will be over on September 25, and if the chargesheet is not filed before that, the accused will get default bail.

"Within 2 days we will be filing," the SG said. The SG also informed the bench that the Special Investigation Team has submitted a status report to the judges regarding the investigation.

The bench also perused the SIT status report.

In July, the Court had issued notices to the Union, the State of UP and the Shri Ram Janmbhoomi Teerth Kshetra Trust on the petitions.

The petitioners, who include RJD MP Sudhakar Singh, lawyer NK Goswami, Ajay Kumar Rai and Hindu Dharma Parishad, also seek a comprehensive audit of the finances of the Ram temple trust.

Last month, the Court had allowed the petitioners and other public-spirited citizens to submit their suggestions regarding the probe to the office of the Solicitor General.
