Supreme Court Advocate On Record Association has written to CJI Ramana requesting him to consider and place an institutionalised mechanism to facilitate consideration for elevation of Advocates On Record/Advocates practicing in Supreme Court Of India for elevation to the Bench of different High Courts.

In its letter the Association has also thanked the Chief Justice Of India for considering the proposal of the Supreme Court Bar Association to request the High Court Chief Justices to consider the  AOR/Advocates practicing in Supreme Court for elevation to the Bench of different High Courts

This has come after a communication was made by Supreme Court Bar Association where it said that CJI has agreed to its request and has requested the Chief Justices of the High Courts to consider lawyers practicing in the Supreme Court for elevation to their High Courts.

SCBA had urged before the CJI that inspite of having vast experience and exposure in dealing with all kinds of issues relating to civil, criminal, constitutional, commercial law, etc., the lawyers practicing in the Supreme Court are rarely considered for elevation by the High Court Collegium as they do not regularly practice before the High Court and while being professionally more meritorious than their colleagues at the High Court, loose the opportunity for being considered as such.

Objections The Proposal: It may be noted that the Delhi High Court Bar Association has opposed SCBA's proposal and requested the CJI to withdraw directions, if any, given to the Chief Justices of the High Courts for consideration of Supreme Court lawyers for judgeship at High Courts.

Further, the Bar Association of Calcutta High Court has also written to CJI urging him to reject the proposal of SCBA "and be kind enough to follow the age old practice to maintain the sanctity of the institution."

The Andhra Pradesh High Court Advocate's Association has written to Supreme Court Bar Association's President asking him to withdraw the "offensive comments" made against lawyers practising in High Courts in their communication and has requested SCBA to stall constitution of Search Committee proposed by it to identify the deserving and the meritorious Supreme Court lawyers.
