The Supreme Court of India on Monday refused to entertain a petition seeking to declare cows as the National Animal of India.

The petition also sought to protect cows within the country.
A Bench of Justices S K Kaul and Abhay Shreeniwas Oka allowed the petitioners to withdraw the plea after a request to that effect was made at the end of the hearing today.
When the matter came up today, the counsel appearing for the petitioner submitted that protection of cows is very important for the Indian government.
This argument invited a rather negative response from the Bench.
"Is it the job of the court to declare an animal as the national animal? Why do you file such petitions in which we are compelled to impose costs?"
"I'm not compelling your Lordships but requesting to direct the Central government to consider this", the counsel for the petitioner replied.
"Whose fundamental right is affected now that you have filed petition under Article 32? Law is to be thrown to the winds because of you come to court with such petitions?", an irritated Bench queried.
In an attempt to convince the Bench, the petitioner further pointed out cows help out our lives immensely. But this didn't change the court's view and petition was eventually withdrawn.
