Supreme Court Denies Interim Bail To 1984 Anti-Sikh Riots Case Convict Sajjan Kumar; Says His Medical Condition Stable

The Supreme Court on Friday dismissed an application filed by Congress leader Sajjan Kumar, who is serving life sentence in the 1984 anti-Sikh riots case, seeking interim bail on medical grounds.
A bench comprising Justices Sanjay Kishan Kaul and MM Sundresh dismissed the application noting that his medical condition is stable and is improving.
"He is accused of heinous crimes. You want him to be treated like some super VIP patient," Justice Kaul asked Kumar's counsel Senior Advocate Ranjit Kumar.
Earlier, the bench had sought for a report from the CBI regarding his medical condition, after 75-year old Kumar approached the Court saying that his health condition was precarious. He is at present lodged in Mandoli jail.
The case relates to killing of five Sikhs in Raj Nagar part-I area in Palam Colony in South West Delhi on November 1-2, 1984, and the burning down of a Gurudwara in Raj Nagar part II during that period. The riots had broken out after the assassination of then prime minister Indira Gandhi on October 31, 1984 by her two Sikh bodyguards.
In May 2020 also, the Supreme Court had refused him interim bail, saying that there was no medical condition warranting the same. The Court however agreed to list his appeal for hearing on merits.
