The Supreme Court on Monday dismissed the petition filed by the CBI challenging the Bombay High Court order granting bail to former Maharashtra home minister and NCP leader Anil Deshmukh in a corruption case over alleged illegal gratification from bar owners and corruption in police transfers and posting in Maharashtra.

A bench comprising Chief Justice of India DY Chandrachud, Justice V Ramasubramanian and JB Pardiwala did not entertain the special leave petition filed by the CBI.

At the outset, CJI told Solicitor General of India Tushar Mehta the bail granted in the PMLA case was affirmed. The bench then proceeded to dismiss the petition summarily.  While dismissing the petition, the bench clarified that the observations made by the High Court will not influence the trial and are only confined to the issue of bail.

Deshmukh is under custody since his arrest on November 2, 2021. In October 2022, he Bombay High Court had earlier granted bail to the former Home Minister in a money laundering case, which the Supreme Court refused to set aside. However, Deshmukh remained in jail due to the CBI case.
