Supreme Court Disposed Of 1293 Miscellaneous Matters, 106 Regular Matters & 440 Transfer Petitions In Last Four Days: CJI UU Lalit

Speaking at the felicitation function organised by the Bar Council of India, the newly appointed Chief Justice of India U.U. Lalit today provided figures of the number of cases disposed of by the Supreme Court in the last four days, after taking charge as the new CJI. CJI Lalit said that in the past four days, the Supreme Court has disposed of a total of 1293 miscellaneous matters, 106 regular matters and 440 transfer petitions, adding that more and more emphasis is on disposing of regular matters. Bar Council of India (BCI) had organized a felicitation function in the honour of newly appointed Chief Justice of India. The event was attended by Solicitor General of India Tushar Mehta, members of the BCI, representatives from various State Bar Councils and members of Supreme Court Bar Association (SCBA). Stating that he joined the Bar way back in 1983, CJI U.U. Lalit expressed that he never imagined about getting in front of the representatives of various State Bar Associations which would be "truly representative in character." "It's a very humbling experience," CJI added. He said "People say that all throughout the life, a judge decides the matter, passes judgments on matters that come before him, and somebody said very beautifully that on the date of his retirement, lawyers pass judgment on him."Thanking all the representatives of State Bar Councils, CJI U.U. Lalit said that he would sincerely strive and do his best to live up to their expectations. "I wanted to share with you something that happened in last four days. We have been listing matters as compared to the time before I took over, matters which were far in excess in number, in last four days, my Secretary General has put the figures before me," CJI Lalit said. Providing the figures, CJI added:"The total number of miscellaneous matters that the Court disposed of in four days was 1293. Number of regular matters disposed of was 106, sepcially when two days were miscellaneous days. You can well imagine that the Courts are now giving more and more emphasis to dispose of regular matters. Above all, the transfer petitions disposed of was 440 in four days. This is what the number is, what we're constantly working towards, that's our endeavour, what we're striving to achieve."CJI Lalit concluded his address by saying "You are from various walks of lives, various areas, various Bar Councils, this is the message that I make through you, let it go down the line in every area, every district, that yes, Supreme Court will try to dispose of as much as you are capable of bringing before Supreme Court."Before swearing in as the new Chief Justice of India, Justice U.U. Lalit had made three major announcements regarding the reforms he will try to bring during his 74-day tenure as the next CJI. The reforms were: first, bringing more transparency in listing system; second, having a system for freely mentioning urgent matters before respective benches and three, having one Constitution Bench functioning throughout the year.In line with the said promise, the Supreme Court on August 30 notified important changes to the listing of fresh cases to ensure that the same is done in a timely manner.
