The Supreme Court on Tuesday adjourned to January 2022 the hearing of writ petition filed by a Noida resident against the road blockade at Delhi-NCR border as part of the farm protests.

Solicitor General of India Tushar Mehta requested that the matter be adjourned in view of "the changed circumstances". It may be noted that three farm laws, which were the subject matter of the farmers' protests, were repealed by the Parliament last week.

Accepting the request, the bench of Justices SK Kaul and MM Sundresh posted the matter to the second week of January 2022. The writ petition was filed by a Noida resident Monicca Agarwal, who complained that her daily commute time increased due to the road blockade.

It is pertinent to mention that in a big announcement, Prime Minister Narendra Modi said on November 19, 2021, that the Central Government will take steps to repeal the three contentious farm laws.

The Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha on November 29 had passed the "Farm Laws Repeal Bill 2021" to repeal the three contentious farm laws enacted in 2020, against which various farm organizations were carrying out widespread protests for the past year.

On September 30, while hearing the petition, Justice Kaul had made certain critical observations against the road blockade. Observing that highways can't be blocked perpetually, Justice Kaul had observed that redressal should be sought through the judicial forum or Parliamentary debates instead of street protests. The bench had adjourned the case to today after the Solicitor General sought time to implead the farmers' organizations.

Earlier, the bench had observed that the Union and the Governments of Haryana, Delhi and UP had to find a solution to the road blockade.
