The Supreme Court on Monday granted bail to Jitendra Narayan Tyagi aka Waseem Rizvi in the case related to the alleged hate speeches made at the Dharm Sansad which was organized in Haridwar between 17th and the 19th December 2021.

The bench comprising of Justice Ajay Rastogi and Justice B. V. Nagarathna granted bail to Waseem Rizvi along with certain conditions being imposed on him. One among the condition is that he should not address electronic media.

The bench noted that the co-accused in the case has been granted bail and that chargesheet has been filed by the police after investigation.

On August 29, the Supreme Court had refused to extend the interim bail which was granted on May 17 for 3 months on medical grounds and had asked Tyagi to surrender. Today, Senior Advocate Siddharth Luthra, appearing for Tyagi, informed the bench that he has surrendered as per the previous order.

The bench also issued notice on a writ petition filed by Tyagi seeking to club the subsequent FIRs.

Tyagi was arrested on January 13 this year in a case registered for offences under Section 153A and 298 of the Indian Penal Code. A single bench of Justice Ravindra Maithani refused him bail observing that he had made hugely derogatory remarks. "The Prophet has been abused; it intends to wound the religious feelings of persons belonging to a particular religion; it intends to wage war. It promotes enmity. It is a hate speech," the Court said.

Jitendra Tyagi, who was formerly known as Wasim Rizvi, was once the Chairman of the UP Shia Waqf Board. In December last year, he converted to Hinduism and accepted the name Jitendra Narayan Singh Tyagi.
