Don't tell me practice, I'll decide what practice happens in my court,CJI DY Chandrachud orally remarked on Tuesday, irked by the submissions of Senior Advocate Vikas Singh seeking listing of a case.

Singh had mentioned a case regarding allotment of chambers for lawyers. However the CJI told him that listing this week may be a “little difficult”. The CJI expressed his willingness to take up the case on 3rd February.

However, Singh insisted that the matter be heard at the earliest. “It was listed yesterday. Practice of the court is hearing matters which are listed.

This prompted the CJI to remark,

Don't tell me practice, I'll decide what practice happens in my court. Yesterday the board was heavy so I couldn't hear. If we keep it till 6 pm in the evening, lawyers would have a problem. I also had administrative work to do.

Justice Chandrachud, while he was still a puisne judge in October 2021, had disclosed that every morning, he personally peruses all emails to secure a listing which has been received by the court-master from AORs until the previous evening, and "99 out of 100 times", he ensures the matters are listed expeditiously.

Recently, after taking charge as the CJI, he had issued directions to the Registrar Listing for automatic listing of freshly filed cases on specified dates.
