NEWS THIS WEEKSupreme Court Quashes Criminal Defamation Case Against Aroon Purie, Former India Today Chief EditorSupreme Court bench comprising Chief Justice UU Lalit, Justices Ravindra Bhat and Bela M Trivedi granted relief to Aroon Purie, founder-director of India Today in defamation suit. The petition was filed by Aroon Purie challenging the criminal defamation complaint filed over a 2007 news article "Mission Misconduct" in India Today magazine. However, the court did not grant relief to the author of the news article.CAA Does Not Violate Assam Accord & Cultural Rights Of People In North-East : Centre Tells Supreme CourtThe Central Government has told the Supreme Court that the Citizenship Amendment Act 2019 does not violate the cultural rights of the indigenous people in Assam and North Eastern States.In an additional counter-affidavit filed in the Supreme Court specifically addressing issues raised in relation to North-Eastern states, the Ministry of Home Affairs said that "there is no provision in CAA which would affect the distinct language, script or culture of citizens of Assam and other North-Eastern States".Supreme Court Adjourns Hearing Of Petitions Challenging Citizenship Amendment Act To December 6The Supreme Court adjourned the petitions challenging the Citizenship Amendment Act, 2019 to December 6 2022. Trivedi on Monday refused to entertain a plea seeking the setting up of anti-corruption courts with a mandate to dispose of each case within a year in all districts across India. The bench orally remarked that the petition was not concrete. Accordingly, the bench advised the petitioner to withdraw the petition.
