The Supreme Court today granted bail to two accused - Pawan Kumar Bishnoi and Jagtar Singh - in Punjabi singer Sidhu Moosewala's murder case of 2022.
A bench of Justices Vikram Nath and Sandeep Mehta passed the order, while dealing with the accused's challenge to the Punjab and Haryana High Court order which denied bail. The High Court had denied bail noting that it would be appropriate to await recording of statement of eye-witnesses before the accused were granted bail.
During the hearing, Advocate Abhay Kumar, for Pawan Bishnoi, argued that only Pawan Bishnoi's name was similar to Lawrence Bishnoi; other than that, the two had no connection. It was further contended that Pawan got roped in based on a confessional statement recorded during his custody in another case.
The counsel added that Pawan had since been discharged in the other case and the allegation that he provided the Bolero car (at the instance of accused-Goldy Brar) used in commission of Moosewala's murder was not supported by any recovery.
Kumar further pointed out that there were about 180 prosecution witnesses and the petitioner had already spent over 3.5 years in custody. Counsel for Jagtar Singh, on the other hand, claimed that Singh was only a neighbor and did not facilitate the alleged recce for the incident.
After hearing the parties, the Court deemed it fit to grant the accused bail.
