Supreme Court Rejects Bail Plea Of Accused In Gujarat Mob Lynching Case

The Supreme Court today dismissed the bail plea of one of the men accused in the murder case of Salman Vohra, who was allegedly beaten to death by a mob during a cricket match in Gujarat.A bench of Justices Vikram Nath and Sandeep Mehta heard the matter. Noting that the bail plea of a co-accused was earlier dismissed, the bench refused to entertain the petitioner's plea at this stage.In June 2024, Salman Vohra, 23-year-old Muslim man, had gone to attend a cricket tournament in Chikhodara village of Anand district, Gujarat with two of his friends. There, as per reports, his friends met with an altercation with the accused. To save them, Salman Vohra intervened, however, he was given knife blows and beaten with sticks and bats, which resulted in his death. An alleged video of the incident, which went viral on social media, showed members of the crowd cheering on the perpetrators.The incident drew criticism from many political leaders and activists, including AIMIM MP Asaduddin Owaisi, who called it a case of mob lynching. After investigation, the Gujarat police booked the accused for the offences punishable under Sections 302, 201, 143, 147, 148, 149, 323, 324, 504 and 506(2) of IPC and Section 135 of the Gujarat Police Act.The petitioner initially approached the Gujarat High Court for regular bail, but his plea was denied, considering the seriousness of the offense and noting the specific allegation against him that he caught hold of Salman Vohra's neck so he could not escape, while other co-accused inflicted knife blows."The said overt act on the part of applicant – accused is nothing but sharing common intention which is evident from the fact that they were armed with deadly weapon and inflicted injury to the victim and considering indiscriminate blows on the dead body of deceased, prima facie, involvement of applicant is found and corresponding injury on dead body is also found", the High Court observed.Aggrieved, the petitioner approached the Supreme Court, but could not secure the desired relief.The petition was filed through AoR Rajivkumar.Case Title: KIRAN @ HOLO MAFATBHAI PARMAR Versus THE STATE OF GUJARAT, Diary No. 32284-2025 Click Here To Read/Download Order
