Supreme Court Advocates-on-Record Examination Notified, to be Conducted in June

The Supreme Court has announced that the next Advocates-on-Record examination will be held in New Delhi on June 12, 13, 14, and 15. Under Rules 5(i) and 5(ii) of Order IV of the Supreme Court Rules, 2013 and Regulation 2 of the Regulations regarding Advocates-on-Record Examination made under the said rules, the top court has invited applications from eligible advocates to participate in the upcoming examination. Eligibility Advocates with a minimum of one-year continuous training commencing from the end of the fourth year from their date of enrolment till Sunday, April 30, 2023 are eligible to take the examination. Even those candidates who would complete their training before the commencement of the examination would be eligible. However, applications will be accepted only on the production of the requisite certificate of training from an Advocate-on-Record as per Regulation 6 of the Regulations regarding Advocates-on-Record Examination. Further, candidates who have either:Failed to secure 50 per cent in one paper in the last examination, but secured 40 per cent or more in that paper and 60 per cent in the aggregate; orFailed to secure 60 per cent in aggregate despite receiving passing marks in all the papers in the last examination would be permitted to appear only in a single paper of their choosing, although such candidates would be entitled to appear in the examination afresh, subject to other conditions being satisfied. Last Date of Application The deadline for submitting the application is Sunday, May 6, 2023. It has been clarified that the application must reach the Secretary, Board of Examiners by the prescribed date and no application shall be accepted after the last date for the receipt of applications. Mode of Application Candidates may procure physical copies of the application form from the Office of the Secretary on any working day during working hours. A copy of the form, along with relevant instructions, has been appended with this notification as an annexure. Absenteeism Candidates bearing roll numbers who remain absent in any of the papers would be presumed to lack sufficient preparation for the examination and would be dealt with under Regulation 5(b) without giving them any further opportunity. Such candidates shall not be permitted to sit in any subsequent examination except for good reason and with the express permission of the Board of Examiners. Number of Chances A candidate who is unsuccessful in all the papers of the examination will not be eligible to appear in the next examination under Regulation 11(iii). Any candidate who does not appear in all the papers and fails in the others shall be deemed to have failed in all the papers, including those in which they have not appeared. A candidate can avail a maximum of five chances to clear the examination under Regulation 11(iv) and appearance in even a single paper shall be considered to be a chance. Result and Re-evaluation Candidates will be considered successful on obtaining a minimum of 50 per cent in every individual paper, i.e., on practice and procedure of the Supreme Court, drafting, advocacy and professional ethics, and ethics, and a combined aggregate of 60 per cent in the examination. There is no provision for re-evaluation of answer sheets and no application or representation for the same would be accepted, as per Regulation 12. Any other relief, other than one in nature of re-evaluation, shall only be entertained within the period of 30 days within the declaration of results. Read the notification here.
