Supreme Court Seeks CBI Response On Sandip Ghosh's Bail Plea In RG Kar Medical Hospital Case

The Supreme Court recently issued notice to the Central Bureau of Investigation(CBI) on a bail plea filed by former principal of R G Kar Hospital Sandip Ghosh, accused of financial irregularities and corruption.
A bench comprising Justice MM Sundresh and Justice PB Varale has sought CBI's response by October 15.
Ghosh was the Principal of the Hospital and College where the brutal rape and murder of a junior doctor took place on August 9, 2024. The High Court on August 13, 2024, had transferred the investigation to the CBI relating to the doctor's death.
He was initially called in for questioning by the CBI, which later arrested him on charges of financial irregularities at the hospital, followed by his alleged role in the aftermath of the incident. Nationwide protests broke out, leading to the Supreme Court taking suo motu cognisance of the same.
Ghosh had also moved the Supreme Court challenging the Calcutta High Court's order to transfer the SIT probe into alleged irregularities in the tender processes and mismanagement by Ghosh, to the CBI. The Court had declined to entertain his plea.
The allegation against Ghosh was levelled by former Deputy Superintendent at RG Kar, Akhtar Ali, who moved the Calcutta High Court against former principal Dr Ghosh, alleging serious illegalities committed by the former principal. In his plea, Ali alleged that Ghosh committed serious illegalities, such as mismanagement of dead bodies, reselling biowaste in the open market, misutilization of public funds etc.
Ghosh has been granted bail in the case alleging a cover-up in the brutal rape and murder case after the CBI failed to file its chargesheet within the stipulated time of 90 days. However, he remains in CBI custody in the financial irregularities matter. In 2025, CBI had informed the High Court that the State Government had given sanction to prosecute Ghosh.
