The Supreme Court will hear today the petitions relating to the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls in the State of West Bengal.
A bench comprising Chief Justice of India Surya Kant, Justice Joymalya Bagchi and Justice NV Anjaria will take up the matters at 2PM.
One of the petitioners is Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, who is seeking that the upcoming assembly polls be held on the basis of the 2025 electoral rolls than the fresh rolls to be published after the SIR on the ground that there are several irregularities in the process leading to mass disenfranchisement. Banerjee has also raised issues with respect to the publication of 'logical discrepancy' list, saying that people are served notices over minor name-spelling mistakes. She has also taken objection to the ECI appointing 'micro-observers' to oversee the process, saying that they have been appointed from BJP-ruled states to deliberately omit certain voters from the list.
The Election Commission, on its part, said that it was constrained to appoint micro-observers since the State did not co-operate with the process and spare its officers for SIR work. Last week, Banerjee herself had appeared in the Court and made submissions in the matter. The Court sought the ECI's response and posted the matter today.
