Chief Justice of India Surya Kant on Friday said that a special vacation sitting of the Supreme Court will be held on December 22 to hear urgent matters. He will take a call on how many benches should sit after seeing the number of matters.

The CJI made this observation when some lawyers orally mentioned some matters for urgent listing today itself, since the Court is closing for winter vacations today. The Court will resume regular sitting on January 5, 2025.

When a counsel sought the urgent listing of a matter, CJI said, "All those who are in the queue seeking listing, will you argue on Monday? We are ready to sit on Monday."

CJI said that he will not permit any listing today. Pointing out that there was heavy filing this week and the judges are already overworked studying the files, CJI asked how they will read the files if the matters are listed today.

"We will list on Monday on condition that you will argue," CJI told the counsel.

"Wherever you give an urgent memo, we will find out if there is an actual urgency and list on Monday. Only thing is that you will have to argue on Monday. The hon'ble judges have been reading the files the entire night since there was so much filing. They have spent their entire night reading the briefs. I am not going to ask them to read a new brief today," CJI said.

When certain other matters relating to child custody, bail, protection from arrest etc., were mentioned, CJI said, "The Registry will find out if actual urgency is there. And if it is found that there is genuine urgency, interim bail or custody issue, then we will list the matter on December 22. Whether one bench or two benches should sit, we will see how many matters are there."
