The Cockroach Janata Party (CJP) on Tuesday withdrew its proposed September 5 protest march in Delhi, with its spokesperson Saurav Das telling the Supreme Court bench that the decision had been taken in view of steps initiated by the Centre to withdraw cases registered against protesters.

Das appeared before a bench comprising Chief Justice of India Surya Kant, Justice Joymalya Bagchi and Justice V. Mohana and informed the court that the organisation had decided to call off the proposed march.

Solicitor General of India Tushar Mehta told the bench that the Centre(Delhi Police), and the States of Bihar, Assam, West Bengal and Maharashtra have filed applications seeking to quash the FIRs linked to student protests, and assuring that no future FIRs would be registered in respect of the protest related events from July 20 to July 25. The SG said that the applications have been filed to honour the assurance made by the Centre to the CJP leaders on July 25.

The SG said that in view of the commitment shown by the Centre, it was expected that the CJP would call off the protest announced on September 5.

Saurav Das, who was present in the Court, then came forward to address the bench. He said :

"Thank you, sir. I am just here to read out a statement. As co-convener of the CJP, I want to state that in view of the positive assurances of the Government of India and the judicial sanctity bestowed upon them today, and in view of the order being passed by this Court, the CJP deems it appropriate to withdraw the call for the march on September 5 and looks forward to compliance with today's order. I also thank the Court for this decision and the learned counsel on both sides, Ms. Vrinda Grover and the Solicitor General, for their efforts."

Welcoming the resolution, CJI Surya Kant said, "If both sides show good faith, then all issues can be resolved one by one. There is nothing in the world which is too complicated that it cannot be discussed with an open mind."

SG said that both sides acted constructively and not like adversaries.

The CJP had announced the September 5 march on August 24, alleging that the Centre had failed to fulfil assurances given on July 25 that had led the organisation to withdraw its prolonged agitation over examination irregularities.

The proposed march was to begin at India Gate and proceed towards the New Delhi Police Headquarters. The organisation had said that families of NEET aspirants who died by suicide and alleged victims of police action during the July protests would lead the demonstration.

The CJP had accused the government of delaying the withdrawal of FIRs against student protesters and of failing to provide a written assurance on the commitments made during the July 25 negotiations.
